What Is a WSHP?

  • Water Loop Connection: Many condo buildings have a central cooling tower that cools water.
  • Heat Exchange Process: Air is drawn from inside the condo unit. Once inside the WSHP unit, the warm air passes over a water-to-refrigerant coil. Instead of “cooling” the air, this coil helps transfer the heat from the indoor air to a refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs the heat.
  • Refrigerant Cycle: Inside each unit, a refrigerant cycle—with a compressor, evaporator, and condenser—transfers heat between the air and the water loop. The WSHP has all these components (compressor, evaporator, condenser) all within the unit you see in your condo.
  • Water Loop Heat Rejection: The water, now carrying the heat from the indoor air, flows away to a heat rejection unit. This unit is designed to remove heat from the water so that it can return to its original, lower-temperature state, ready to remove more heat from your condo. (Note: While some systems use a “cooling tower,” the key function here is that heat is constantly extracted from the water before the cycle repeats.)

This design differs from traditional split systems that rely solely on outdoor air. By using water, these systems deliver a more stable and efficient temperature control, which is ideal for the high-rise condo environment.
