April’s New Tariffs Are Driving Up HVAC Costs Across South Florida

If you have gotten a quote for an AC replacement in South Florida recently, you probably noticed the price was higher than you expected. There are a few reasons for that, but one of the biggest right now is tariffs.

On April 6, 2026, the federal government strengthened Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper. The rates are steep: 50% on articles made entirely or almost entirely of those metals, and 25% on derivative products that contain significant metal content.

On top of that, the way tariffs are calculated changed. They now apply to the full customs value of the imported product, not just the metal content inside it. That is a major shift from how things worked before, and it means higher costs across the board for anything with copper, steel, or aluminum in it.

That includes virtually every AC system installed in South Florida.

Why Do Tariffs on Metal Affect the Cost of an AC System?

Walk through the components of a typical central air conditioning system, and you will find metal everywhere. The condenser coil and evaporator coil are built with copper tubing. The refrigerant lines connecting the indoor and outdoor units are copper. The cabinet housing the condenser is steel or aluminum. The compressor is steel. The ductwork is sheet metal. The electrical wiring is copper.

Copper tubing runs through virtually every refrigerant circuit in the industry. When the tariff on copper imports sits at 50%, every foot of tubing, every fitting, every connector costs more. That cost does not stay with the manufacturer. It moves through the supply chain and lands on the invoice you see from your contractor.

Steel and aluminum follow the same path. The outdoor condensing unit sitting on a concrete pad behind your house in Pembroke Pines or Coral Springs is largely made of these materials. So is the air handler inside your garage or utility closet.

How Much Are AC Prices Going Up?

Every major HVAC manufacturer has announced price increases in 2026. Here is what they have published so far:

Lennox raised prices up to 10% on residential equipment and accessories, effective February 16. Carrier announced up to 8% across its residential lines. Daikin and Goodman (same parent company) went up to 7%, effective March 2. Goodman/Daikin parts saw an even steeper 11% increase on the same date. Trane raised residential products up to 5%, effective January 1.

These are list price increases from the manufacturers. By the time equipment moves through distribution and reaches a contractor’s quote, the actual impact on what a homeowner pays typically lands somewhere in the 6% to 10% range on a full system installation. On a $10,000 to $15,000 AC replacement in Broward or Palm Beach County, that is an extra $600 to $1,500.

And those increases were announced before the April 6 tariff changes took full effect. More adjustments are likely coming.

What Changed on April 6, 2026?

The April 2 presidential proclamation restructured how Section 232 tariffs work on steel, aluminum, and copper. Three things matter for AC costs:

The tariff now applies to the full value of the product, not just the metal inside it. Previously, when a derivative product (say, a copper fitting or an aluminum coil assembly) was imported, the tariff was calculated by splitting the customs value between the metal content and the non-metal content. Only the metal portion got hit with the tariff. Under the new rules, the full customs value of the product is subject to the tariff rate. That is a significant increase in the actual dollars owed at the border.

The rates are 50% for metal articles and 25% for metal-heavy derivatives. Semi-finished copper products like pipe, tubing, wire, rods, and sheets face a 50% tariff. Derivative products that are substantially made of copper, steel, or aluminum pay 25% on their full value. Some industrial equipment gets a transitional 15% rate through 2027, but standard HVAC components do not qualify for that carve-out.

The domestic metal exemption was removed. Previously, products made with U.S.-origin steel, aluminum, or copper could qualify for an exemption from Section 232 tariffs. That exemption is gone. Even domestically sourced metal components in imported assemblies are now subject to the tariff.

It Is Not Just Tariffs. Three Cost Pressures Are Stacking Up at Once.

Tariffs are hitting at the same time as two other forces that are pushing AC costs higher in South Florida.

The R-454B refrigerant transition. As of January 1, 2026, all new residential AC and heat pump systems must use A2L refrigerants like R-454B instead of R-410A. The new systems require redesigned components, updated safety features, and new installation procedures. Early estimates suggested a 10% to 15% premium over equivalent R-410A systems. Some contractors are seeing the premium run closer to 15% to 40% depending on the brand and configuration. On top of that, R-454B itself has been in short supply. Reports out of Florida indicate the price per pound has jumped from around $10 to over $70 due to cylinder scarcity, with suppliers placing strict limits on orders.

Tariffs on Chinese imports. Beyond the Section 232 metal tariffs, Chinese-manufactured goods face a layered tariff structure that combines a 10% Section 122 tariff with a 25% Section 301 tariff on most products, plus sector-specific duties that push rates even higher for certain categories. Many HVAC components and electronic controls are manufactured in China. Companies like Daikin, Mitsubishi, and Honeywell, which have manufacturing centers across Asia, are passing these costs through to the equipment they sell in the U.S.

A 10% baseline tariff on all imports. Even products not specifically targeted by Section 232 or country-specific tariffs face a 10% baseline import tariff. For an industry where the global supply chain touches dozens of countries, that baseline adds up across every component.

What Does This Mean for South Florida Homeowners?

South Florida runs AC harder than almost anywhere else in the country. Usually 12 months minus 3 days out of the year. Salt air along the coast in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami shortens equipment life. Humidity in Davie, Weston, and Plantation makes undersized or aging systems work overtime.

All of that means South Florida homeowners replace AC systems more often than the national average, and every one of those replacements is now more expensive.

If your system is still running but getting close to the end of its life, the math on repair versus replace just shifted.

If your system has failed and you need to replace it, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Get multiple quotes. Contractors source equipment through different distributors and have different relationships with different brands. In a market where prices are moving fast, the spread between quotes can be wider than usual.

Ask about available inventory. Some contractors and distributors still have pre-tariff inventory on hand. Equipment that was imported before the April 6 changes may be priced lower than new orders. That inventory will not last long.

Do not skip the permit. It can be tempting to cut corners when costs are high, but unpermitted AC work in Broward and Miami-Dade counties can create real problems when you sell your home or file an insurance claim. The permit process also ensures the installation meets current building codes, which matter in hurricane country.

Consider a maintenance plan. Extending the life of your current system through regular maintenance is the most cost-effective response to rising equipment prices. A well-maintained AC system in South Florida can last 12 to 15 years. A neglected one might give you 8.

What Should Condo Boards and Property Managers Know?

Associations and property managers across Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami are dealing with this on a larger scale. Capital improvement budgets set in 2024 or early 2025 may not cover the actual cost of chiller replacements, rooftop unit upgrades, or building-wide AC overhauls at current pricing.

A few things to consider:

Rebid any projects that were quoted more than 90 days ago. Pricing from late 2025 or early 2026 likely do not reflect the April tariff changes. Ask contractors to confirm whether their quotes are based on current or pre-tariff equipment costs.

Phase large projects if possible. If a building needs to replace 40 units or a central plant, breaking the project into phases gives you a chance to take advantage of any pricing relief if tariffs are adjusted later. It also spreads the capital hit across multiple budget cycles.

Factor tariff volatility into reserve studies. Reserve study assumptions about future equipment costs should account for the current tariff environment. The 3% to 5% annual escalation rates that many studies use may be too low right now.

Will AC and HVAC Tariffs Come Down?

That is the question everyone in the industry is asking, and there is no clear answer. Section 232 tariffs are authorized under national security grounds, which gives the executive branch wide latitude to set and adjust them without congressional approval. They can be changed quickly, but they can also stay in place for years.

The HVAC industry, through trade groups like ACCA and HARDI, has been lobbying for adjustments, arguing that the tariffs are raising costs for contractors and homeowners without meaningfully strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity. Whether that pressure leads to changes remains to be seen.

For now, the safest assumption is that current pricing is the new baseline, and planning around it is smarter than waiting for relief that may not come.
