“Scrud”: The Brown Waxy Gunk in Your Washer
The brown, waxy, sometimes greasy buildup that techs find inside washing machine gaskets and dispensers has an actual industry name: scrud. It’s the chemical reaction of fabric softener residue, detergent residue, and undissolved soap from cold water washes, all stuck together with the natural body oils that come off your clothes.
Scrud doesn’t just look gross. It flakes off onto your laundry, producing blotchy gray or brown marks that look like dirt. Eventually it starts to smell musty too.
How to clear it:

Concentrated dye on fabric
Many detergents and softeners are blue or green. Pouring concentrate directly onto clothes (or having it back up through a clogged dispenser) leaves sharp blue or blue-green splotches. Never pour onto fabric. Dilute liquid softener 50/50 with hot water before adding to the dispenser.
Pods not dissolving
HE pods need warm water and room to tumble. Overloading the machine or running cold-only cycles leaves them whole. Drop the pod into the empty drum BEFORE you add clothes. Use warm or higher when you can.
Mechanical Washer Problems
If you’ve ruled out water and detergent, you may have a mechanical problem. The expensive ones:
