AC Not Working? 6 Quick Fixes You Can Try Yourself in Under 5 Minutes

Your AC just stopped working, and waiting on a service call sounds like the last thing you want to deal with on a 90-degree afternoon. Before you book one, try these six checks. Each one takes about five minutes, none of them need tools, and any one of them might be all that’s wrong.

This is the same checklist our service team runs through on the phone before sending a truck. 1. Check the Thermostat First

It sounds too simple to be the answer. It’s the answer more often than any other item on this list.

Walk up to the thermostat and confirm three things:

  • Mode is set to “Cool.” Not “Off,” not “Heat,” not “Fan.” Someone in the house may have changed it without saying anything, or a smart-home routine may have flipped it.
  • Setpoint is below room temperature. If the thermostat says 78 and you’ve set it to 78, the AC has no reason to kick on. Drop it at least three degrees below the current room reading.
  • The screen is actually on. A blank or dim screen usually means dead batteries (most wall thermostats run on two AAs behind the faceplate). Pop the face off, swap the batteries, give it 30 seconds to wake up.

If the thermostat is on, set to Cool, and well below room temp, and you still hear nothing within a couple of minutes, move to the next check.

2. Reset the Tripped Breaker (One Time)

Open your electrical panel and look for the breakers labeled AC, A/C, AIR, or HVAC. There’s usually one for the air handler (inside) and one for the condenser (outside).

A tripped breaker doesn’t always look obvious. Instead of sitting fully OFF, it often sits halfway between ON and OFF. To reset it correctly:

  1. Push the breaker firmly to the full OFF position.
  2. Then push it firmly back to ON.
  3. Wait five minutes before expecting cold air. Most systems have a built-in delay to protect the compressor.

Reset it once. That’s the rule. If the same breaker trips again within a few minutes, stop. A repeating trip is the breaker telling you something on the AC circuit is drawing more current than it should, and repeatedly forcing it back on can damage components or start a fire. Call us instead.

3. Change the Clogged Air Filter

In Florida, a dirty filter is one of the most common reasons a system stops cooling. We see it on service calls all summer long. Pull the filter out, hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, it’s done.

Why this one matters so much: a clogged filter chokes the airflow returning to your air handler. The coil behind it gets too cold, condensation freezes on it, and you end up with a block of ice where heat exchange is supposed to be happening. Cold air stops, and you may even see water dripping inside the house once the ice melts.

South Florida humidity, pet dander, and construction dust load filters faster than the package label suggests. Plan on changing your filter every 30 to 60 days. If you have pets or run renovations in the house, lean toward 30. Set a recurring reminder on your phone.

4. Check the Outdoor Disconnect Box

This is the fix almost nobody knows to check, and it costs you nothing to look.

Walk out to your outdoor unit. On the wall right next to it, you’ll find a small gray box (about the size of a paperback). That’s the AC disconnect. Most are the “pull-out” style: a plastic block slides into the box and completes the circuit. Lawn crews bump them with weed trimmers. Storms shake them loose. Pool service workers occasionally pull them and forget.

Look at it carefully. Is the pull-out fully seated? Is the switch (if there is one) flipped to ON? If something looks off, push the pull-out firmly back into place or flip the switch to ON. Then go back inside and give the system five minutes to come back up.

Important safety note: do NOT stick your fingers, screwdrivers, or anything else inside the disconnect box. The pull-out is designed to be handled by its plastic body. If it looks scorched, melted, or you smell anything burning, leave it alone and call us.

5. Open Every Vent and Clear Every Return

Walk through every room. Check two things in each one:

  • Supply vents (the small ones blowing cold air). Open every louver fully. If a register is closed because “we don’t use this room,” open it anyway.
  • Return vents (the big ones that pull air back in). These are usually on a wall or ceiling. Make sure nothing is in front of them. A couch pushed up against a return is the most common offender. Throw pillows, drapes, and laundry baskets count too.

Here’s why this matters more than it seems: closing vents does not save energy. It chokes the system. Modern AC equipment is designed to move a specific volume of air. Block enough of it and you starve the coil of the warm return air it needs to dump heat. The coil drops below freezing, ice forms, and now you’re back to “no cold air” with a frozen coil on top of it.

If you’ve been closing vents in unused rooms to “redirect” cooling, that’s the fix right there. Open them all and see if cooling normalizes within an hour.

6. Thaw a Frozen Coil

Pop open the closet, garage, or attic door where your air handler lives. See ice on the copper lines coming out of it, or a sheet of frost on the unit itself? That’s a frozen evaporator coil, and the system can’t cool until you melt it.

Don’t try to chip the ice off. You can puncture the coil and turn a free fix into a refrigerant leak. Instead:

  1. Turn the AC OFF at the thermostat.
  2. Set the thermostat fan to “Fan Only” (sometimes labeled “On”). This blows warm room air over the coil and melts the ice faster than letting it sit.
  3. Leave it that way for 2 to 4 hours. Put towels under the air handler if it’s in a finished space. Melting ice has to go somewhere, and if the drain line is clogged you’ll get a small flood.
  4. Once the ice is gone, change the air filter (a clogged filter is the most common cause of a frozen coil in the first place).
  5. Switch the thermostat back to Cool and watch for cold air within 15 minutes.

If it freezes again within a day, the cause is deeper than a dirty filter. You’re looking at a refrigerant problem, a failing blower motor, or a duct issue. Those aren’t DIY territory. Book a diagnosis and we’ll find the root cause.

When to Stop and Call Us

The list above covers the fixes that are safe, fast, and free. There are a few symptoms that mean you should put the screwdriver down and pick up the phone. These involve high voltage, refrigerant, and EPA-regulated work that is genuinely dangerous to attempt.

  • Humming unit with a fan that won’t spin. Usually a failed capacitor.
  • Warm air blowing with ice on the refrigerant lines. Likely a refrigerant leak or low charge.
  • Screeching or grinding from the outdoor unit, or a fan that’s stopped spinning. Fan motor failure.
  • Weak airflow plus a burning smell from the vents. Blower motor or wiring.
  • Water dripping or pooling near the indoor unit. Clogged condensate drain line.
  • System won’t power on at all even with the breaker confirmed ON. Bad contactor, control board, or compressor.
